I have a number of short MPG files that contain audio that I'd like to remove.

The MPGs are already second generation SD camcorder videos and I don't want to lose any more quality. I intend to convert them to MP4s to post on my web site.

Therefore, I'd like to remove the audio without re encoding and I'd prefer a freeware program since I only have a small number of times I want to use the program.

I've goggled and searched this forum and have yet to find the perfect solution. I've installed and used a number of programs but none of them has done the job without a significant loss in video quality and I'm getting a little frustrated. Therefore, my question.....

Based on my latest search, I think that ffmpeg might do the trick but I'm a little intimidated by the command line interface. I see that there is a GUI front end called Avanti but it is not obvious to me that the pairing of these two programs will do what I want.

In any case, I downloaded both and installed them as per instructions. I'm using Win 8 64 bit Pro and as per (the Win 7) instructions, I moved the Avanti and ffmpeg directories to the "Program Files (x86) directory and moved the ffmpeg.exe and ffplay.exe files to the Avanti\ffmpeg directory then started Avanti. I got an error message "Avanti seems to have limited Disk I/O permission and cannot continue startup initialization" (as per the Win 7 instructions, I used the 32 bit static version of ffmpeg)

Therefore, what did I do wrong and if I correct it, will ffmpeg & Avanti remove the audio from either my MPG or converted MP4 file without re encoding?

If not, is there another option?

Wow! Thank you for an amazingly fast reply! You replied before I had finished editing my original question to provide more detail.

I installed AviDemux and it worked like a charm on my MPG file. I got unusable output when I tried to remove the audio from my MP4 (previously re encoded from the MPG). No matter, it just a workflow issue. I can remove sound from the MPGs then re encode to MP4.

Thank you again. You are a star!!!!!
