I record a puppet show that I write for my students and want to buy a camera to do it. Right now I am using my cell phone, which is not too bad of an option but it is not HD and also, a very practical issue, does not have a tripod mount.
The puppet stage is about 6' long and is light very well, and has a variety of lighting options - the camera does not need to have a flash. The video that I make will be shown in 4 formats: the first is in the school theater via projector onto a screen that is about 24'; the second is to be used in ebook format. The third is to show online and the fourth to be used in the classroom on 42" tvs.
Sound is not recorded when the action is filmed, but rather is mixed together later. The length of the average play is about 5 minutes, so the camera does not need to have a huge amount of memory. At this point, there is no need to do special effects - anything needed can be done by the computer. Maybe I can describe my needs as fairly high quality video recording with no other special requirements. Some people have suggested that I get a high quality webcam (some have better than HD ability now), others have suggested cameras like the flip, or even a standard camcorder with digital media.
The camera will never be mobile - it will always be mounted on a tripod, with the filming done in my bedroom studio. There is no need (I think) to plan for the future and buy something that has additional features. It would be nice if I could plug the camera directly into the computer and record the show directly onto the hard drive.
Any suggestions?
