Here's what I have: Dish network with HD receivers.

Here's what I want to do: Capture video onto my PC (Laptop)
in a format that I could import into a video editing software (eg: Sony Vegas).
I'd like to be able to start and stop recording when I want to.
(Optionally: I'd also like to be able to receive over the air HD if possible with the same device.)

Question: What device and manufacturer can give me this?

    Thanks,

    Ray

Can't think of any that does both.

Hauppauge HD-PVR caps HD analog component and converts to h.264 which is somewhat difficult to edit depending on your laptop spec. Note that many set top tuners won't output HDMI and analog component at the same time.

There are many USB HD tuner sticks that cap ATSC.

Not sure what you mean by "cap ATSC"?

Over the air digital TV is ATSC (MPeg2 codec) in USA. The channels you tune can be SD or HD as broadcast. These tuners just separate the tuned channel and capture the broadcast stream to an MTS file without recode.

Here are more examples of external ATSC tuners with a USB interface.

This is an external ATSC tuner with a different interface. It plugs into your home network.

But be assured none of these off-air tuners will cap from your Dish service other than some will cap SD from composite/S-Video.

We are talking two devices here if you want to cap HD from Dish..
