Is there an easy way to add chapters to an xvid video?

No. Just xvid doesn't support any chapters.
You must put it in a container that supports chapters like mkv,mp4,divx or dvd,blu-ray. -
Additionally, if you use the Divx container and your playback device does not fully support this container, the chapters won't work.
I am not 100% sure about this so I could easily be wrong, but I think the only tools that allow for you to create chapters in Divx containers are commercial ones that cost money. If there is something free that can do this, I don't know what it is. -
