  1. Hi,

I have a Windows 7 (64-bit) laptop that initially was capturing fine (ADVC-50 powered by another PC's power supply, via FireWire, into the laptop's PC card slot) using WinDV.

But I was having the fourCC dvsd "can't find codec" issue while editing, so I decided to install the Cedocida DV codec, which seemed to fix things. I noted the Cedocida installation warning that it would "replace my DV codec", but since it fixed my editing issue, and since so many here have raved about Cedocida overall, I didn't think about it again...

Until... I went back to capture again using WinDV. The video appears in the WinDV preview window, but as soon I click "Capture", WinDV hangs and nothing is captured. I have to reboot to clear things. I'm thinking the Cedocida codec is the issue, but not sure.

Thus my question: Has anyone else encountered this? I have no idea how I could restore the "default" Windows 7 codec to see if that fixes the capturing. Uninstalling Cedocida did nothing, nor did reinstalling.

Any help or information very appreciated!

  2. Make sure you have the legacy firewire driver installed. Win 7 64 installs another firewire driver that causes conflicts on some computers. Let us know if that works for you.

  3. Hi, and thanks very much for the reply. I originally installed a Firewire PC card (not USB) + its card driver, that as far as I can tell did NOT overwrite the Firewire Win7 driver - but again here's the thing - initially everything was working fine. WinDV displayed and captured the input as DV to the hard drive perfectly. Only when I installed the Cedocida DV codec did things stop working. I didn't see any Firewire driver in the Cedocida install (I wouldn't have expected there to have been one). Just so I'm clear, before I go mucking with the drivers, are you suggesting the Cedocida driver interacts differently with the Win7 Firewire driver than the default Win7 DV code does, and that's causing the problem?

This is a laptop that came with Win 7 (as opposed to an upgrade), so I'm not sure where to get the "legacy" Firewire driver. So is it 32-bit as opposed to 64? Can I switch back and forth if I need to?

Sorry for so many questions, but I'm hoping they can help someone else too. Thanks again for your reply.

  4. When I installed Win7 64 both firewire drivers were automatically added. You will have to manually install the legacy driver. If you don't know how to do that then follow these step by step instructions: http://www.studio1productions.com/Articles/Firewire-1.htm

  5. TreeTops, thank you. You nailed it!

I remember switching to the legacy driver when I first installed everything - apparently a Windows 7 update (or something!) that happened after that changed the driver back to the non-legacy driver. So, switching back to the legacy driver (again) did the trick.

    Thanks again for the help...!
