  1. When I open a Video DVD using any player on Windows I get the same results: Wrong aspect ratio and subtitles.

What I want is to convert this video DVD to a MKV file using Vidcoder but same undesired results.

  2. Any Player? Which have you tried? What about in your standalone DVD player attached to your TV? And are you making sure to play the DVD and not just the VOB files? Anyway, it looks to me like it's not a 720x480 DVD but maybe 352x480 (check with MediaInfo to confirm or disprove) and it's not being properly displayed. I've never used Vidcoder, but you'll have to make it or any other converter you use treat it as if it's 704x480 if you're trying to do a resize to something like 512x384 as in your picture. Maybe there's a way to override the aspect ratio and/or resize settings in VidCoder.

On page two of this VidCoder guide is a picture of a screen to set the resolution yourself:

  3. I've tried VLC and Realplayer. Standalone DVD player doesn't show issues. I am sure playing DVD using right click then play with VLC, not single VOB files. Following pic is the MediaInfo report:

The following is the MediaInfo report of another DVD of the series. This one plays fine, no issues of any kind.

I don't get it, they look the same. Be patient I am newbie, please

  4. Interesting, it's 720x576. Your standalone plays it OK but the software players don't, at least the ones you've tried. Then there must be something screwy going on with the Sequence Display Extension. To fix that you'd have to demux the DVD, run the M2V through ReStream to fix it, and then reauthor using Muxman.

But you don't care about the players, right? You just want to reencode it properly? In that case, I'd do as I suggested in the previous reply and set the resolution yourself in VidCoder to 640x480, 512x384, or some other 1.33:1 ratio.

  5. Let me see I got it. If I just want to reencode properly with VidCoder to get my mkv files I don't need to do the demux part, right? Just have to follow the instructions in your second paragraph, right?

I don't care whether the source is fixed or remains screwy.

  6. Right. That second page of the guide, about a third of the way down, shows a picture of a screen in VidCoder (never used it myself) where you can do the cropping and then resize it yourself, if I'm understanding it correctly.

My mention of the Sequence Display Extension, ReStream, and demuxing was only if you wanted to fix the DVD itself.

  8. You're welcome, but thank me after you get what you want. If you get what you want.

  9. I was having second thoughts about this issue and I decided to analyze the VTS_01_1.VOB file of two DVD's of the series. Here are the screenshots:

    This is the wrong one:

This is the one that plays fine:

    Any comment?

  10. Post the long format MediaInfo report. View -> Text, then mark, copy paste.

Note that the aspect ratio flagged in the IFO file can override the aspect ratio flagged in the VOB file.

  11. Yeah, in the first two pictures you were opening IFOs and in the second set, VOBs. And the wrong one, as I speculated earlier, has a width of 352 (although I was assuming it to be NTSC).

So, if neither VLC nor RealPlayer are playing it correctly, then they're getting the DAR from the VOBs rather than from the IFOs as they should. Another reason to do a 'custom' resize and not let Vidcoder do it automatically, if that's what it's doing now.

I wouldn't use RealPlayer for anything, or even install it to my computer. VLC is known to have issues with DVD playback. I'd suggest opening the IFO in a different player for testing, perhaps MPC-HC.

  12. @manono
I've done what you told me with VidCoder and now video is fine but the subtitles. Subtitles are wrong.

  13. The one that that plays fine is Full-D1 and wrong one is 2553 kbps, 352x576 (????) (4:3) @ 25.00fps (PAL). How any software can author 352x576 (????) (4:3)?

  14. The subs, eh? Too bad. So near yet so far. Maybe the subs are being added in before the resize. VidCoder is a front end for Handbrake and I've had no experience with either and it doesn't use AviSynth where it's easy to stick the subs in after the resize.

So, unless you're willing to keep the subs separate to be played along with the movie (it results in better quality video anyway, to encode for the same file size but without the subs), then I know of no solution other than to suggest you use a different program, perhaps XviD4PSP. Maybe some people that use Handbrake and/or Vidcoder know how to solve your problem. Sorry, not much help.

  15. Don't be sorry manono I appreciate your help a lot. Once again, many thanks and I'll try XviD4PSP.
