    Hi,

I'm trying to burn a .vob to a DVD+R DL disc. I have tried doing it with both DVDFlick (that uses ImgBurn behind the scenes) and Nero 12, and it failed with both.

1.- My DVD is a PLDS DVDRWBD DS-6E2SH. I tried updating the drivers in Device Manager but it tells me I have the latest.

2.- I ran a test with the PC Checkup tool that came with my Dell laptop, and the "DVD+R DL Read Write Test" passed.

    Please find below Nero's log.

    Can anyone help out?

    Thanks.

I used option "Create DVD" with DVD Flick to burn a couple of episodes (originally in .MKV format) of a TV show to a DVD. Then I used Nero to copy the generated files (of extension .VOB) to a DVD+R DL.

But it failed with the log pasted above.
Does anyone know what may be wrong? Thanks

You should always use ImgBurn for double layer burns.

Try having DVDFlick output to the hard drive and then do a burn outside of that program using ImgBurn. The output from DVDFlick should be a dvd-video, with a Video_TS folder and an empty Audio_TS folder. Use the dvd folder as input into ImgBurn, not individual vob, ifo and bup files.

From what i can find on the net, this is a combo, laptop drive. Laptop drives are not generally great writers. You have the latest firmware from Dell installed?

The mid code on the discs shows them to be MKM 003, usually available under the Verbatim brand and some of the best DL discs available. Unless you have some counterfeit discs.

The error codes in Nero show an incompatibility between the burner and the media. Which is very bad news, since you cannot find better discs. It might be possible to find MKM 001 discs, which are rated for slower burn speeds, but I doubt they will change the outcome.

    Thanks KErry56.

Well, with Nero I did the same thing, I added the root folder (that contains the AUDIO_TS empty folder and the VIDEO_TS folder inside), I didn-t add the .vobs individually.

I am using a Verbatim dual layer +R disc, I wonder why this couldn't be working. I'd believe the media is a good one, the laptop is not brand new but is not that old (2 years), and I didn't use the DVD-reader/writer very much so I guess it shouldn't be broken.

Should I try cleaning the lens or using a DVD cleaner disc?

One thing to point out is that the test to write a DVD with the tool that comes with the laptop passed, no errors.

I tried updating the drivers in Device Manager but it tells me I have the latest.

I'll try using ImgBurn as you suggest: output the files to the hard drive with DVD Flick and then burn with ImgBurn (that's what I did with Nero anyway but... I'll give it a try)

    One more thing:

when I try to burn with Nero, the only speeds available are 4x (5.540 Kb/s) and 2.4x (3.324 Kb/s)
    The Verbatim disc is 8x

Shouldn't I be able to burn at 8x? Is it a problem that I can burn at 4x max?

    thanks.

  7. 1st - Your DVD writer doesn't support 8x write function. It will only write at 4x for DL (dvd-9) discs. It will write at 4x for single layer (dvd-5) discs. You can ask the writers support page if there's a firmware update that supports 8x writing speed, but if its 2 years old, and there is no update now, there probably wont be or the drive can't handle it. ANYWAYS burning at slower speeds gives you a better copy, better data, less/no errors and will last longer then by burning faster, anyways does 15, 20 seconds the disc finishes earlier that important to chance write errors or players refusing to play a disc turning them into coasters?

What are you trying to do? Just burn a single .vob to a disc as a data disc? Or as a DVD video to use in other stand alone DVD players? If its the later, you need to author the disc. IMO Nero and flick are useless junk. I tried them all. I use Slysoft AnydvdHD, Clonedvd2 & Clonedvdmobile to rip/get my files. Then I use Clonedvd2 , avi to dvd, ConvertXtoDVD or Clownbd to author/write my files to disc.

For a dvd to burn/play properly the.vob (video file) you also need to provide the player with the proper disc structure which is as follows, VIDEO_TS.BUP, VIDEO_TS.IFO that tells the player what to do then the VTS_0#_#.BUP, VTS_0#_#.IFO, VTS_0#_0.VOB & VTS_0#_#.VOB FOR EACH .VOB THERE IS (The # corresponds to the same numbered .vob file. IE; DVD STRUCTURE should be like this

    VIDEO_TS.BUP
    VIDEO_TS.IFO
    VTS_01_0.BUP
    VTS_01_0.IFO
    VTS_01_0.VOB
    VTS_01_1.VOB
    VTS_02_0.BUP
    VTS_02_0.IFO
    VTS_02_0.VOB
    VTS_02_1.VOB
    etc...

AND so on. Authoring programs do all this work for you. If this is what your trying to do. IMO the easiest way to do this is by using avi2dvd or convertxtodvd to prepare the file(s) to be burned to a dvd and then I use CloneDVD2 or CloneCD to burn the resulting .iso or .video/vts structure to a dvd+r or +dl. I use Imgburn or VSO Bluray converter Ultimate to burn to Blu-rays. I found this way to be the easiest, again, IMO.

The drive you have is not able to burn faster then 4x for DL discs. It is capable to write at 8x max for single layer DVD's. You can check the support site for your drive to see if they updated its firmware to support 8x discs. Verbatim is an awesome product, the "DATALIFEPLUS" SERIES ARE THE BEST (IMO) Hope this helps some, but if not feel free to contact me or post exactly what your trying to do. (is it a disc rip, single file, from,a camera or a dvd recorder (like a vcr) wanting to play it on other players, etc) Have a great day!

I forgot to add ... You can try burning at the slowest or slower speed, I wouldn't drop below 2x or 2.4x as 1x is also known to cause errors. Also, I always burn to a .iso file to my Hard Drive first , this way I don't waste a disc if there are any errors and the burn fails, then if there are no errors all you have to do is burn the .iso to a disc with IMGBUGN, CLONECD OR CLONEDVD2.

Newer burning/ripping/authoring programs are showing "Pseudo Errors" in hopes to discourage pirating movies. In doing so, those of us honest people wanting to protect our investments are the ones who get the shaft. Like this disease "Ultraviolet" discs that are made to stop working aft the 4th or 5th time you watch it. Which would kill me as I watch movies all day long over and over being disabled. It all stems to $$$$. I hope us, the people will show them (the disc makers) whats for by never buying anything that is "ultraviolet" or made to decay after each use till its unplayable.

Thanks ZoWillie for the detailed response.

I will install those applications and try with them.
But before doing that, I would like to understand what does the error "Could not perform startof disc-at-once" mean?
What does "Power calibration error" mean?

I have tried burning with DVDFlick and with Nero and the same issue showed up. So my guess is that something else is going on and I will get the same error with those applications you mention.

    thanks

Your welcome, hope it all helps. "...not perform disc-at-once" error means your drive doesn't support that function and with the "Power...error" most likely means it cant draw enough power to start it. Disc-At-Once is not really needed or I should say, not to worry about it. Just uncheck that option in the configuration of the program your using. Basically, it means the entire process is completed without ever turning the laser off. Once you select the data you want to burn and click go, the burner will not stop until the session is complete and the disc "closed" meaning no more adding to the disc. It is also the recommended way to record AUDIO cd's. Again, the programs I use handle most of the settings for me.

POWER CALIBRATION ERROR hopefully will disappear when you uncheck the DISC AT ONCE OPTION. If not it usually means the drive is starting to go. The laser cannot maintain the power it needs to burn your disc. By shutting off the disc at once option, this allows the laser to shut off and gain a little more power before starting again, also by burning at a slower speed allows it to run more relaxed also helping it. Some people say use the fastest speed possible to stop this error, but I disagree with that.

The reason I don't use DISC AT ONCE is it always seems to cause problems with me. I burn my DVD's always between 4x and 6x and my Blurays at 2.4x.= and have yet to have a complaint.

Power calibration error could also be triggered if your using a incompatible disc. Check with the burners/computer support area to see what discs are included in your burners firmware. But I don't think this could be it as your using Verbatim discs and they are widely supported.

ONE MORE THING - THE ENTRY "Sense Key: 0x03 (KEY_MEDIUM_ERROR)" IN YOUR LOG FILE POINTS TO your device not liking the disc your using. Could be because of the DAO setting, or it could be the disc. Try it with DAO turned off, if still same error then try a different type/brand of disc. If you can let me know the # of the disc your trying to use and I'll check for you.

    Thanks again ZoWillie.

Finally, I was able to burn the disc!

    The things I did, fyi:

    1. I updated the firmware to a newer one (although I don't think that solved anything since after updating it I was still getting the error)
    2. I made the following changes in ImgBurn configuration:
    SmartBurn= Enabled
    Force HT= Enabled
    OverSpeed = Enabled
    OHT= Disabled

    3. I burned the disc in Windows safe mode. (I used ImgBurn)

All of these things were suggested in this post: http://xboxpirate.eu/forums/topic/3099-set-l0-data-zone-capacity-failed-reason-invalid...arameter-list/

Not sure if changing the values specified above, or burning in Safe mode (or both) made the trick, but it worked.
I will try burning another disc in Windows normal mode, just to confirm if that had anything to do.

    Thanks

The infamous Nero "power calibration error" can mean what ZoWillie stated, but it is a catch all and it can mean other problems too that have nothing to do with the laser.

If you can't do "disc at once" burning then it's time to replace your burner. Some playback devices may have issues if you don't burn the discs with "disc at once".

Finally, that's just broken to have to burn in Safe mode and if that is the only thing that works, you need a new burner.
