Hi
I have a rather large Columbia House video collection... Okay... I'll admit it... It's the entire original Star Trek series... Anyways, I've decided that I would like to convert it VCD format so that I may watch them on my DVD player. I've done some reading and some lurking, and now I need some advice.
First, I'm working with a hideously out of date AMD K6 333 processor, 96 megs of ram, Windows ME, and an ATI TV Wonder card. After banging my head against a wall, replacing all the box drivers, upgrading Direct X, and fixing a multitude of problems, I have the system running pretty well... Loosing a hell of a lot of frames though. I have 256 megs of ram on the way to replace my 96, but I don't think that will be enough; it's obvious that I'm going to have to upgrade my processor.
I'm looking at a few different bare bones systems, and I'm probably going to buy an AMD Duron 750, or *maybe* a 1.0 GHZ Thunderbird, and end up with anywhere from 256 to 512 megs of ram. I'm not looking for advice on what the best system is, or how to become a CaptureGod. I just want to know if the range of equipment I'm looking at will be sufficient to produce a high quality capture from a VHS source.
I'm also wondering if the ATI software (Which also had to be upgraded as it was useless out of the box... Grrr...) that "came" with the card will do the trick... Nero 5.5 seems to be a kick ass program to burn the VCD's with, so at least I have that part covered. Hmmm... I think that's it![]()

WOW!! The entire Original Star Trek Collection ?? I envy you man!!
Anyway, to the point, here are a couple of suggestions and prices that might shock you so hold on to something strong!
Socket-A Mainboard for AMD Duron/Athlon: EPoX 8KTA3 = 80$
AMD Thunderbird 1ghz at 266mhz Bus = 78$
512mb SDRAM PC133 = 35$
All prices are taken from http://www.pricewatch.com and i'm quite sure they are still dropping, so if you don't hurry, you might get it for cheaper, i'm thinking of getting 1.5gb of RAM, it's only 105$
