Hi,
Have a standalone DVR for surveillance and it has 1TB HD in it. I want to back it up to my Win XP.
I think it is Linux, but not sure. Whilst it is connected to the network okay as I get pictures on my ipad and iphone, I cannot see it in the XP Network explorer. I assume this is because it is Linux.
It does have a USB 2 port but they say for a Card which will not take anywhere near 1TB.
Any help to do this please?
Thanks
oz

Could be it supports DLNA but not SMB, etc.
How about model #s to start?...

Iy looks like it is a generic unit with no actual name ot model.
This is it

Sorry can't help with the model #
As I said it is connected via a switch to my LAN out out to web as is my XP box.

You bought it, eh?
And it came with a user manual, just like it says, right?
So look in the UM and follow the instructions on setting up the IP address and installing the controller/player software.
I have worked with devices just like this one. It may or may not show up as a simple "website", or it could be a proprietary interface. All depends on the model. Can't help you further without a model #. (And the idea that it doesn't have one is ludicrous - you just aren't looking hard enough)

Answer = No
From the dvr's interface you'll find they are very limited in what can be done over networks and xp has no native method of reading the hd directly from the unit for backup purposes ... you'll need to use additional storage attached (formatted fat32) to the dvr via usb or to the pc for backing up the recordings (dose not support writing to ntfs formatted drives) ... Only tests will confirm if drives over 1 terabyte work or not.
My "generic model" will write to self powered 2 terabyte external drives without problems -
Hi and thank you for the replies.
Do you mean if I format a HD to FAT 32 and add it to a USB external into the USB, I should be able to dump it all over?
I guess this still would have to be thru the very poor menu of the DVR.
If that's the case - good enough for me

In your browser, type in the IP address with port. This might require "Java" to be turned on, or some of the cheaper and older ones use ActiveX controls. For ActiveX, you have to use IE.
Mine has a standalone backup software, you might have it too. Look in the utilities that came with the DVR.
Linux has nothing to do with this. That's just the internal OS, doesn't matter. -
If the internal stuff is encrypted, you are screwed regardless of how you format an external or whether is seems to "copy ok".

Yeah, the disk acts as a local NAS, so it's going to have a NAS file system, which is unreadable to a PC. You have to use the software to back it up, i.e. transfer it unencrypted.
Oh, and it takes forever to transfer even with the included software. I got mine set to always have 14 days of history. This way I don't have to bother doing backups.Last edited by budwzr; 8th May 2013 at 13:09.
