Hello this is my first post so to introduce myself I am a newbie to video. I have a little experience with still photography only on a hobby basis though. I have been looking into getting my first digital camcorder and I need some help.
I have to admit the more I research them the more I get confused. I like the Cannons based on what I have read so far. I would be shooting video mostly for family events and vacations but would also like to do some youtube how-to videos (I have a lot of hobbies), I also like to photograph wildlife but not a priority.
My starting out budget is $500.00. I was wondering opinions on getting something like a New Cannon vixia R400 or a used Canon Vixia HV40 HD Camcorder. Or any other suggestions would be appreciated. Should I stick with new or look at a little higher end used cameras?
Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks.

for ease of use and intended videos i'd go with the r400, it can be bought for ~ 300 on amazon.

Another consideration is do you have a Firewire port on your PC to capture the footage from the HV40 and do you want to work in tape?? The HV40 is a good camcorder but like other tape based devices it's sen it's day. I agree with aedipuss on this..

I should probably keep it as simple as possible. Is there much difference between the r300 and the r400? Another question I have is I've seen these refurbished r300s on Ebay. Is that something I should consider or should I stay away from them?

with the retail price of the r400 at 300 i wouldn't look at a used refurb unless it was less than half. you flip a coin with buying someone else's problem. if you wait a while the r400 should show up on sale somewhere for less.

I decided to go with the M500. It should be here from B&H next week. Thanks for all the input.

  9. IŽd be nice if you came back here to share your opinion/experience with your camcorder once you start using it. It could help others.
