  1. The subtitles on an .mkv I have look like this:

My VLC player preferences are default and other videos with subtitles display them readably (normally). Here's a normal looking video with subs for comparison.

Is this a problem with the video file itself? Should I demux the file and and try to remux new subtitles?

Can you disable them? So they aren't burned in.

If youy can disable them it t's probably ass/ssa subtitles with some crappy font or you need to download that font. Or it could be image subtitles.

I'm guessing it's some kind of antialiasing gone wild in the font.

Yes, you should demux them and remux new subs as the easiest way to fix this. I suppose if you can post back what format they're in, maybe somebody will have an idea about whether you can fix it or not. I almost never deal with anything but SRT so I can't help with non-SRT subs and I'm sure these are not SRT subs.

  4. @Baldrick: They can be disabled. I'm going to try demuxing whatever subs are in it with MKVEXtractGUI and MKVE Wizard and remuxing with an srt I find online.

EDIT: Here's what mkvmerge is showing me. I don't know too much about these formats, but here it is.

EDIT2: And it worked. Thank you for the help. All that's left now is to fine tune the timing on the new srt. Thanks!
