Hmm, hoping someone can shed light on this problem. I've found and excellent source for PBS programs, and I would like to capture some of them, but I've run into a road block.

Here is the video I downloaded with RTMP Explorer.

    http://www.pbs.org/woodwrightsshop/video/3100/3105.html

From is I got a FLV file of about 62 mb. I loaded it into VLC on my iPad. When it starts, it seems that the video on barely starts (the PBS logo appears in the corner), then nothing.

I know this kind of thing happens when you think you have the file, but really don't, as when you get just enough file to stamp the file name and ext., but is only a couple kb in length, but it LOOKS like I got the whole thing. Plus, VLC should be able to play a FLV file, correct?

Any ideas whay has gone wrong?

    Thanks,

    Hal
I'm afraid. I'm afraid, Dave. Dave, my mind is going. I can feel it..... Yup. Spppllttt. It's gone.

I don't know much about vlc for ipad, but 62Mb seems mighty small for a tv episode, even if it was a half hour.

Since you downloaded it with a windows app, does it play on a computer?

  4. vlc for ipad was available for a short period of time in the app store. It was pulled because of licensing issues.

I still have it. Haven't tried to play flash.

If you jailbreak your ios device, I am sure you can find the app somewhere.

Yes, I grabbed VLC in that window when it was available. I've used it for all sorts of stuff.

Maybe I should try converting the FLV file to something else. It's odd. I'm confident the file size is right. It's almost the same as a second episode I downloaded. That's not a bad size for an FLV file.

I have no idea what went wrong, not without the log files.
Luckily for you the playback is not a hard one to capture. Just tried Stream Transport. Works fine.

EDIT: your download was incomplete, by the way. Stream Transport is telling me you got about half of it.

  7. If it doesn't even play back on the computer version of VLC, then it's a capture problem. Try downloading it again

If it plays back correctly on the computer version of VLC, then it's not a capture problem . That suggests it's an ipad playback problem. You can try re-wrapping the flv to mp4

seems the vlc released for ios wasn't a videolan project so it isn't really "vlc", and was removed for copyright violations.

The popular media player, VLC, made its way to the iPad just a few weeks ago, and the company behind the application, Applidium, has just submitted a version for the iPhone. Here’s our exclusive hands-on of VLC Media Player for iPhone:
Apple received my copyright notification more than 2 months before they pulled the application.
i have an android device anyway...

Well, the REAL reason is unlikely to ever be known, but basically the lead developer on VLC waged a one man campaign against the port because he felt that the GNU GPL, which VLC must be distributed in, is in direct conflict with how Apple Store purchases work because they use DRM. So basically since there was no realistic way to get Apple to not use DRM on downloads from the store, he argued that the entire app had to go so no one could use it. His copyright claim was asserted on code he personally wrote and inserted into VLC. Basically, since HE doesn't agree with how the Apple Store works, he set himself up as a one man crew to personally stop VLC from being distributed. The distribution may or may not violate the GNU GPL (I do not care enough to look into it), but it's really a case of one man's Richard Stallman-esque religious zeal for the GNU GPL and wanting to take his ball and go home when someone did something he didn't like. I think it's a mischaracterization to call it removed for "copyright violations". It would be more accurate to say it was removed for "licensing violations that violated the GNU GPL it was licensed under".

Yes, I got a 128 MB FLV file using RTMP Explorer. It plays fine in VLC (and any other play that plays VLC files) under Windows.

yep correct 128 MB you can convert it to MP4 with transcoding/re-encoding and it should play fine
