So I have an MP4 file and I want to chop out a section in the middle. I'm looking for the best way to do this.
The file doesn't have to end up as an MP4 file if it's easier to convert it to something else and then do the edits or something like that.

Is there a free program that will let me do this easily? Basically I just want to say Start here, End here, and cut everything in between and resave the file.

    Thanks!

You could try AVIDemux. Highly compressed formats like MP4 and H.264 are not really made to edit, especially frame accurate editing, so you may need to re-encode, at least at the cut point to keep everything in sync.

Alternately, you could re-encode to a lossless format like HuffyUV or Lagarith, then edit, then convert back to a more compact format without too much loss. Downside, huge files for most lossless formats.

But that's not simple. I'd try the simple way first.

  3. VideoPad Video Editor will do it. Load your clip, select start point and use the scissors, select the end point and use the scissors, right-click the clip in between the cuts and 'delete' it. Go to Export and save as mp4 with resolution set to 'Youtube HQ'. Seems to do a decent job, but I have only used it this one time to test it.
