Win 7: How to change default image editor from MS paint to Photoshop

Win 7: How to change default image editor from MS paint to Photoshop. When I right click on an image I have the option to edit appears in the context menu, my issue is it defaults to MS paint and I Would prefer to use Photoshop. I don't want to do the open with option, because I want it to open with windows viewer. I'd just like to edit with PS not open with PS. Anyone know how to change the default editor from MS paint to PS?

it is probably the same method as xp.

right-click the icon
select Open With
select Choose Program
find the Photoshop and select it
then, [x] check the box for Always use the selected program...

edit: found it..xp, but w7 should work similar i guess

open windows explorer
select Tools on the menu bar
select folder options..
click the File Types tab
search for your file ext and select it
click on Advanced button
then click on Set Default, then OK, OK

Thanks vhelp, but I'm not trying to change the default open with option. I'm looking to change the default edit with option. If I do as you mention, it would change the default program that opens the extension. For example I want to open jpeg files with windows viewer, but want to edit it with Photoshop. So double clicking a jpeg should just open it in the windows viewer. While when I right click a jpeg the select edit, it would open it in PS.

Hey Roma, thanks tons! I have been going around in circles trying to kick WMP off my DVD & CD play default. DPE did the trick! Now Media Player Classic Home Cinema opens everything.

I think the problem is you'd have to change the "edit" file association for each type of image you use, unless Win7 makes it easier than XP.

In the case of XP you'd use the Tools/Folder Options menu in Windows Explorer, then switch to the File Types tab. I think to change more than a file type's default "open" association you have to reset it first, or maybe even delete it completely. Then you can create it again from scratch while selecting which program opens it and which program edits it etc, and which action is the default (opens it with a double click).
How you get to the file associations using Win7 I don't know, or whether it makes it easier to do something similar for all image file types at once, or whether you'd still need to do them one at a time.... I've no idea.

An easier option (unless Photoshop has it's own settings to change the menus) might be to use the Windows SendTo menu instead. I use it all the time. For XP it's located "C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\SendTo" which might help with where to look for it in Win7, or not..... but you'd simply create/copy a shortcut to Photoshop and/or any other image program and put it in the SendTo folder. Then to open an image using a particular program you'd just right click on it, select SendTo and pick the one you want to use. You can of course do the same with many other program types. Most will play nice and run from the SendTo menu while at the same time opening the file you "send".
Depending on the program and how it opens files you can also use the SendTo menu to open more than one file at a time. The result will vary from program to program. Some programs will load them all, some will open only one, some will get upset and not open any, and occasionally a program doesn't play nice with SendTo at all, but usually it's a convenient way to quickly open at least a single file with a particular program.
