I want to know what's the best way to convert/compress a DVD (VOBs) into H264 (AVI) with subtitles. I'm currently using Avidemux 2.5/2.6 and it seems to be doing a pretty good job. I use SubRip to rip the subtitles.

I was wondering if there is any programs better than Avidemux? Or any recommendations on DVD ripping tutorial?

Handbrake. It can do everything for you.

Rip with anydvdhd or dvdfab decrypter.

I tried handbrake but I'm unable to append all Vob files. I can only work with a single vob file at a time?

Select to open a dvd and choose the video_ts folder with all vob, ifo, bup files.

  6. I generally use DVDShrink to rip/re-author the DVD, with AnyDVD running in the background to do the decrypting, although I believe the free version of DVDFab can be used to decrypt the disc in the same way. Once the DVD is ripped to your hard dive properly if you want to convert to AVI then I'd still recommend AutoGK. You shouldn't need to extract the subtitles manually. AutoGK will load them from the vob files.

For converting using the x264 encoder there's lots of choices but I'm also partial to MeGUI.

I am using the Windows version and I have the option to Source > Folder. It seems to be appending most of the DVDs I have but not for others. It just shows each of the VOB file's time. What can I do?

Yep, File->Folder and select the VIDEO_TS folder and it should load the entire video. If you haven't removed the .ifo files or mixed vob files from others dvd.

If you want full control use megui as suggested above.
