    Hey everyone.
I'm having this flickering green artifact when playing some files on mplayer/smplayer:

It looks like the video was ripped from an olde VHS, the green green target goes flickering along the movie.
The file is a DVDRIP AVC/MP4/XviD.
In VLC it plays normally and the artifact does not appear.

May it be the codecs? (I have the latest available on mplayer.hu)

  2. What's the frame size of the video? Some Xvid decoders don't like mod2. The video isn't likely to contain both AVC and Xvid. Which is it?

I suspect it's a flaky non compatible codec used on the original file. Those things are rampant. I wouldn't bother trying to download another codec ... mplayer/smplayer use their own codecs, as they should. Installing more codecs will probably lead to more problems in the future.

This is why I have both smplayer and vlc installed. Between them you can play just about anything.

If neither will play it properly I'll start asking myself just how much I want to see the damn thing. If I do, I'll try converting it with avidemux. That'll work on pretty much anything too.

BTW jagabo's quite right (he usually is) ... it can't be both AVC and xvid.

It happened to xvid codec file. But i'm pretty sure i've seen the same happen in some AVC some time ago.
As it occurs very seldom it's a minor problem. VLC will do in those cases.

VLC + Mplayer are the best choice.

    Thanks for the answers!
