  1. Good Evening,
I was wondering if I could take a storebought VCD and go take the DAT file from the MPEGAV folder, extract it to my harddrive then use vcdgear to go from DAT-->MPG and burn that? Are storebought VCDs set up like that?

  2. I'm not sure about store bought vcd's, but for normal vcd's your going through one too many steps. I've copied the .dat file from a vcd and loaded it in the Nero VCD template many times with no problems. So, I guess just try it...copy .dat to hdd, try to load it in Nero VCD project, if that fails..may want to rename it to .mpg.

  3. Yes. If tou drag the DAT file into Nero in VCD layout, it will burn.
My preferred option when working with DAT files is to use VCDGEAR to convert the DAT -> MPG (A few small differences) and go from there.

  4. So its that easy to do for sure? Storebought VCDs have the same layout as those burned in Nero? There aren't any copyright protections that are there on DVDs?

  9. if u want it to be a true VCDCompliant MPEG you will have to convert that DAT file to MPEG via VCDGear. Simply renaming does work, however it is not a "true" MPEG file there. DATs from VCDs are MPEGs with special headers. so if u want to rename it, go ahead, but i personally take the 2 mins to convert it using VCDGear to keep it in its original form.

  10. So to recap,
    1. Buy the VCD
    2. Open it :P
    3. Put it in the CD drive and copy the DAT to harddrive.
    4. Use VCDgear 2.0 to go from DAT->MPG
    5. Burn MPG file with Nero 5.5+
    6. Pop a cold beer and watch the best-quality possible of a VCD.

if u just want to make an Identical 1:1 copy of the disc...
    1. Buy the VCD
    2. Open it :P
    3. Put it in the CD drive
    4. Put a blank CDR in the CDRW drive
    5. Open either Nero or Adaptec and do a direct copy

(IMO heres the way i feel about Adaptec vs. Nero, Nero is great for VCD, while Adaptec is great for Audio (easier compliance and such), Photo, and Identical copies, then whicher is your cup of tea u can use for Data b/c both are about the same for data CDs, but thats just my opinion.)

  12. i have successfully made my vcd that i bought into an mpg file. when i ran the dat through vcdgear to make it into an mpg it corrected nearly 3000 errors. why are there so many errors in a mpg file from a cd that was bought? could it be because the version is vcd 1.1?
