    Hello

I have a media center which allows me to play my DIVX files through my TV and also works with subtitles if i include a subtile file with the movie file. However the subtitles are of poor quality on this method so i have taken to hardcoding the subtitles first. I usually use virtual dub for this. However sometimes the subtitles are a little higher on the screen when watching than i would like - they become a little intrusive when watching the movie. I was wondering if it is actually possible ( through virtual dub or some other program) to be able to place the subtitles in a more viewer friendly position?

    Thanks in advance

Yes. By converting them to SSA format, you can name the position you like within the file itself. If using a different text-based sub (one such as SRT), the textsub filter used within Virtual Dub can set a style for you, including the position.

But that will only work if you convert PRIOR to hardcoding in Vdub. Otherwise, there is nothing you can do after the fact that will not also impact the video. That's why they are called hardcoded or "burned-in".

Hi all, yes i understand once hardcoded thats forever. Just to explain I convert my SRT file to SSA using DIVXLAND Media Subtitler. I then hardcode the subtitles using virtual dub. Can someone please tell me do i need to do my postioning of the subtitles within DIVXLAND Media subtitler or with Virtualdub?

SSA (and ASS) allow for positioning and style commands, so the positioning would have to be done within the SSA/ASS itself.

It might help to load the SSA in Aegisub and experiment with the positioning there. (Also, Aegisub can handle SRT > SSA/ASS, too, as far as I'm aware.)
If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them?

I already told you earlier you can do it within the SSA file itself. Then VDub should honor the positioning you set. To make it easy for you (since you seem incapable of figuring it out for yourself), open the SSA in Notepad. The styles part near the top will look something like this:
    [V4 Styles]
Format: Name, Fontname, Fontsize, PrimaryColour, SecondaryColour, TertiaryColour, BackColour, Bold, Italic,
BorderStyle, Outline, Shadow, Alignment, MarginL, MarginR, MarginV, AlphaLevel, Encoding
    Style: Default,Tahoma,60,12632256,8026746,12632256,-2147483640,0,0,1,2,0,2,20,20,60,0,0
The boldfaced number, third from the last, is the one controlling the position. Lower it to make the subs lower on the screen.

I also said you can set the position within VDub if using the TextSub filter. But apparently you don't bother to read the replies.
