Seems most questions like this are pretty dated so I'll pose mine and add my meager requirements.
Have been researching for a program much like DVD Shrink in simplicity and options (ability to remove menus, subs, alt audio, decrypt and acceptable occasional compression) that will work under Win7 (64). Although infrequently I'm still using DVD Shrink on my trusty 1.8Gh XP but I'd like to move it over to the other computer for the rare instance of needing to do a backup. I read that Shrink's decrypt ability is getting dated and figured it might be good to just find a rip app prepared for this eventuality.
There seems to still be some multi-app and clunky options out there along with the simpler DVDfab & CloneDVD2 types but I'm still not sure which are the latest and brainless options currently available as many articles are not time stamped (forums excepted). As I don't do it very often "free" would be nice.
Any insight appreciated.

If you don't do it very often just rip with dvdfab and then open the ripped folder with dvd shrink. Only downside of course is you need the extra storage space for copying the dvd in whole first before transcoding. But generally I don't like transcoding directly from a disc anyway - wear and tear and all.
Other choice is if you buy anydvd it will run in the background and you can use dvd shrink like you always did - no need to rip separately first. I think dvdfab has a similar feature however I use anydvd so I don't know for sure.Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -
Thanks for the reply yoda313.
I've not yet tried installing DVD Shrink to Win7 but if that's not a concern I'll probably do just that and supplement with DVDfab as required. Only occasionally backing up old disks for now but even currently new disks will some day be considered old.
Yeah, have always ripped to disk first and burned later (even though Shrink 3.2 and my Nero 6.x are compatible), simply a more burn-friendly feeling.
Cheers! -
If you like the convenience of burning from DVD Shrink there is a modded version that will use ImgBurn as the burn engine.

DVD Shrink's decrypting ability is not "getting dated". It has BEEN DATED - for YEARS now. If you just don't happen to rip DVDs that use bad sector type copy protection (ie. ARCCOS by Sony, most recent vintage Disney DVDs, and others) it works fine and if you live outside North America then it works the vast majority of the time because bad sector copy protection is rare outside of region 1.
I don't recall anybody posting about DVD Shrink not working under Win 7. If for some reason it didn't work if you have Win 7 Ultimate you are entitled to a free XP virtual machine from Microsoft and you could always install that and run it under that, but again, I don't recall anybody complaining about it not working under Win 7. -
I've used dvdshrink many times in win7 and never had the slightest problems with compatibility except that when I used avast for an antivirus program it wanted to sandbox it. When I switched to microsoft security essentials, which is probably the best antivirus for avoiding false positives, I never had any more problems.
Except, of course, the decryption may be out of date.
I still used it though, usually in conjunction with dvdfab hd decrypter (the free part of dvdfab) as yoda suggested. Dvdshrink may not decrypt all the newer discs but otherwise it's better than dvdfab (the not free part). It has more options, most importantly a 2 pass ("deep analysis") mode I'm sure you're aware of and which I always used. Also the sharpen/soften filters can be really useful, especially if the dvd transfer is grainy.
dvdfab may have some of these features now ... I don't really burn dvds much anymore ... but I still would prefer to do the decryption/ripping separately from the encoding, as mentioned above. It does save a lot of wear on the drive and I swear that doing the low horsepower decryption from optical disc and the high horsepower reencoding from the HDd is actually faster. -
DVDShrink's decrypting / ripping of DVD's is out of date BUT otherwise it works fine.
The simple solution is to just rip the DVD first and DVDFab HD Decrypter is free and constantly being updated to deal with all types of DVD Video copy protection schemes.
So be safe and rip it first with DVDFab or any other up-to-date DVD ripper (I only mention DVDFab since it is FREE) and THEN after you have ripped it use DVDShrink.
It's very simple and avoids any potential ripping problems due to DVDShrink's outdated ripping methods.
And of course you can ALWAYS just buy Dual Layer DVD discs and avoid having to transcode with DVDShrink"The eyes are the first thing that you have to destroy ... because they have seen too many bad things" - Lucio Fulci

I use DVD Shrink in Windows 7, no problems. Avast Antivirus.

Wow.... really ?!?!?
Why would you not just try and install DVD Shrink and see if it works ?
It would have taken less time and effort to do that than going through all these post's......
I have been using DVD Shrink, along with many other old programs, first on my windows Vista systems (years ago) and on my W7 64bit systems for a loooong time.
I just installed them to see if they worked & they did, instead of wasting time asking.
It's not like trying it will break your pc.....
Same goes for DVD Rebuilder, DVD Remake, etc.
Oy Vey..... -
Noahtuck - Sadly nobody thinks of your simple solution any more. I'm not knocking Golem as the question wasn't unreasonable, although, yes, he certainly could have just tried it. The patience some of our members show approaches infinity and I've seen people post here who don't have the intelligence of a cocker spaniel yet some of our members will spend literally hours of their spare time responding to endless posts from people who are truly beyond help and incapable of ever "getting it". So since some of our members have shown that no matter how dumb you are they'll never give up on you, you might as well post about darn near anything and get some of that infinite patience and help directed towards you. There's a thread going on right now where this completely clueless loser started it over a year ago about getting stuff off VHS tape and onto DVD and more than 1 year later he's STILL at square one and 2 and sometimes 3 of our more active and experienced members will not stop trying to "help" this guy who is clearly beyond help. I suggested to one of our members that if he would just get the damn tapes sent to him and do the work for Captain Nimrod that it would take up less time than posting 10+ times a day to a guy who JUST ... DOESN'T ... GET ... IT... but you can imagine how my sane suggestion was received. So heck yeah I would just post about anything here that I'm too lazy to do myself because some of our members are more than happy to waste THEIR time doing YOUR work for you.
Speaking of DVDRebuilder, it does a better job than DVDShrink in terms of quality but not in terms of speed. But if you have a 4 core or more CPU or just lit run overnight, it's fine. -
ha ha I know the thread you mean. I've read some of it and it's nutty.

Without reading all the posts .... DVDShrink 3.2 .... has no problem working on my WIN 7 Ultimate x64 ... and I copy the folder with the DVDShrink 3.2 execute into the "Program Files" ... folder and not the "Program Files (x86) folder. Most likely it will work just fine in either folder ... as long as the shortcut is made correctly. I am a proud owner of ANYDVD ... but not ... ANYDVD HD
There is a free version of DVD Rebuilder and if you include the Cinema Craft Encoder SP v2.70.02.12 or Cinema Craft Encoder SP v2.5 Stand alone version [cost money ?? ... perhaps] you can let it do 9 Passes and the quality will be very nice but someone posting here will say anything past 4 passes is a waste of time ... but what the heck ... I set it for 9 passes ... sometimes it lets me do 10 passes and then I go to bed. Oh ... I bought the DVD Rebuilder Pro ... for 10 bucks ... years ago.Last edited by lacywest; 31st Aug 2012 at 04:10.
