So, I have a problem. I was under the impression that I needed to install a program such as VobSub to display .srt files with the videos they are paired with, but after I installed the program, subtitles on the many .mkv files I have refused to show up on any media player, even after restarting my computer and uninstalling VobSub. Any idea how I can correct this?

Which version of VSFilter/DirectVobSub have you installed? If you're using a 64-bit system, does the version you installed match your player? (In other words, if you're using a 32-bit player, you have to use the 32-bit version of VSFilter. 64-bit player, 64-bit version of VSFilter.)
Have you installed a splitter, like Haali?
If you play a video that you know has soft/switchable subtitles, does a green arrow show up in your taskbar tray? You may need to check the settings from VSFilter's Start Menu folder, or that icon in the tray.
Edit: Of course, if you're using a player that uses its own internal codecs/filters, like VLC, you're going to have to change the settings of that player. VSFilter won't, of course, help you display subtitles in those particular players. If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them? -
