  1. I know that there can be problems with no picture on .MOV files, but I have a strange situation where some of my files play correctly and others have sound only.

My only video experience is with my Canon digital still camera with which these videos were taken.

I have used Pinnacle Videospin to edit and compile shots and I think that it may be those files which now do not have a picture. Since doing the editing my PC burnt out and I had to have new system, motherboard etc. I have lost the originals of the editied files.

The only other clue that I have is that the videos that play have a frame rate of ~30.064fps and 44,100 samples/sec and those that have sound only are ~29.976fps and 48,000 samples/sec.

All this means very little to me and any help would be much appreciated.

Can you play the mov in windows media player? You might need some decoder. You can try install ffdshow or maybe quicktime.

Or try "remux" the mov to a avi with mp4camtoavi and edit the avi in pinnacle.

  3. Will not play in Windows Media player or Quicktime (I have uninstalled and then re-installed the latest version). It really should play in Quicktime! New videos taken today play perfectly with Quicktime, so it is definitely some to do with these particular files.

Try VLC - it plays most media formats.

If VLC plays the files, then as Baldrick said, you're probably missing the correct decoder for other programs to play them.

If you want more specific suggestions, it'd be helpful to know the details of these files. Open one of them with mediainfo, go to view>text and copy/paste the info here.

  6. VLC does play them - but I do not understand why Quicktime will not; has Pinnacle Videospin changed them in some way?

Did the Quicktime player ever play these converted files?

I don't use Windows or Quicktime, but various comments say the Qt 7 player doesn't support all h264 variants (profiles/levels).

.MOV is just a container format. The actual video and audio streams in a .MOV file can be any of a number of stream types. It looks like the videos converted by Pinnacle Videospin are of a different format to the originals.
