  1. I re encoded a 1080p mkv video to 720p using handbrake. The original mkv file contained chinese subtitles and were displayed perfectly using the vlc player.

The new 720 mkv file now displays the chinese subtitles in boxes instead of the characters. Is there an option I should of chose in handbrake? Or is there is simple program that I can use to just extract the vobsub from the orginal mkv file and just create a idx/sub file thing?

    the chinese subtitles are vobsub.

    Thanks for any help.

You could use mkvextractgui-2 to extract the subs from the original mkv and then add them to the new mkv with mkvtoolnix / mkvmergegui.
