I think dvdfab has such a feature. But is it worth it?

  3. Not yet, that I know of. DVDFab can do a 3D to 2D SBS (side-by-side) or TB (top-bottom); the result is effectively at half resolution, since the video is doubled *within* compliant 1080. I tried it and thought it was terrible. To be specific, the added depth was okay (and one must have reasonable expectations about this), but the encode itself was poor. I'm not a fan of Fab's encoding prowess anyway. Mind you, you can set the resolution higher, but it will likely only play from computer on a suitable monitor. No go on a 3D HDTV.

Then there's the fact that some scenes will benefit not at all if there's no pronounced background and foreground in the picture. And rarely, you might even see a sort of "reverse 3D" effect. Like the coronation scene in ROTK. The purplish silk (?) around Aragorn's neck is pushed too far in the background, and it looks like his head is separated from his body. I saw this most definitely in the Fab conversion, only slightly with my TV's on-the-fly conversion.

My LG 65LW6500 can do a much better on-the-fly conversion to 3D. But it's not like I want to do that very often, the result is a bit tiring to watch and the effect is not nearly as good as "real" 3D. Plus a lot of 3D releases are no great shakes either, adding little to the movie. Hugo is a conspicuous exception, that one is very much worth watching in 3D.

It will be interesting to hear others' opinions on this.

When the OP asks if he can convert ALL - ALL! - of his BluRay films, I think that's not really an issue. It's like the "AC3 sucks - DTS is perfect", "Must convert my mono pre-1950 soundtrack to AC3 5.1" thinking.

So the short answer for the OP is: "NO!"

  6. Might as well add that it took a *long* time for Fab to do the test conversion of ROTK. On the order of ~12 hours, IIRC, and that was on a beefy 6-core machine. The same movie was encoded with BDRB to MKV, (H264, crf 20, no resize) in an hour and a half on that computer.
