  1. I have a Philips DVP3560 which has a usb port. The machine supports most everything and plays .SRTs. Does anyone know if there's a way to play a standard off the shelf DVD and run an .SRT from the USB at the same time? What I'm doing is buying foreign DVDs, ripping the subs or CCs and translating them. I've been ripping the video as well and watch them through the usb as an avi + srt. But wouldn't mind skipping the AVI part if I can just run the DVD and load the .srt from usb while the movie is going.

No. USB and DVD play are a "one or the other" kind of thing and not a "do both" kind of thing.

Doing that kind of translation really sucks but I guess if you have no choice... If you are using a software program you should realize that even the best will be incorrect some percentage of the time. If you are lucky it will not be often enough to give you an incorrect understanding. Then again, for all I know you are doing the translations in your mind because you know the language well enough to do that and in that case you can ignore my warnings as they won't apply.

  4. I have Phillips DVP5990. When there is something plugged into the USB it bypassed the DVD. What you may be able to do if you have a large USB key is rip the dvd. Then use Vob2Mpg to create a single .mpg file from the main movie. Name the .srt with the same base name as the movie. If the movie is "movie.mpg" then name the srt "movie.srt" and it should pick up the subtitle file if it's in the same folder as the like named .mpg file.

For episodic DVD then you're probably stuck converting each title to an avi.
