I have the new Philips & am trying to play videos from a WD Passport 500GB external HD plugged into the USB port. It won't recognize the drive...in fact I also have a Seagate Freedom 320GB drive & it won't recognize that either. Now here's the interesting part. I have a friend with the same identical Philips (same model) and they both play fine in his. Any idea what gives? And would a powered USB hub solve the problem? Any ideas?

It may only support FAT32 partitions.

A powered enclosure for the drives or a powered hub might fix the problem, assuming that they aren't NTFS formatted. But I can't give you a 100% guarantee. All I can tell you is that we have had reports in the past of some external drives not working on Philips DVD players until the drive became powered either by a hub or its own enclosure.

How strange - I have the exact same problem today. Just got the player in and tried to hook both the WD 500gb and a Seagate 1tb up to no avail. USB flash works fine.

What's another good player out there supporting external hard drives?

I guess I forgot to mention that I did format both the WD 500GB & the Seagate 320GB in FAT32 & loaded them with AVI format movies. Also it does play the AVI's just fine from a thumbdrive (3 different ones) and as I also did mention that those 2 hardrives do play in another DVP3560 that I tried them on. Too bad I just got the Philips as I did not realize that the LG was available & would also do what I wanted. Just can't justify getting another player right now. Any ideas on a reasonably priced powered USB hub that might work?

I had read reviews that said the Philips would play from a external hard drive so I'm disappointed as well. I'll take the DVP back to Wal-Mart and pay the 30 bucks more for the LG but it would be nice if I could get the Philips to work!

    Maybe its just the 3560?
The USB works fine with flash drive, just not hard drive.
DIdn't think about updating the firmware - you think that would
    ork?

The feature list mentions flash drives specifically and other USB devices only in general, that is - it doesn't come out and say hard drives are supported. The user manual only has:

    USB
    - Compatibilty: Hi-Speed USB (2.0)
    - Class support: UMS (USB Mass Storage Class

The latest firmware can be found here: http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/dcbint/cpindex.pl?ctn=DVP3560/F7&scy=us&slg=en

    Perhaps they've added HD support.
    Have a good one,
