Using many guides already available on the internet I found the following steps to region-unlocking my Phillips DVDR615 DVD Player / Recorder:

    1. Turn on the player from the front panel (without a disc inserted)
    2. Press TUNER or the blue button (or open the HDD browser)
    3. Press PLAY
    4. Enter 159 121 212 005 255
    5. Press PLAY
    6. Turn the player off
Or some variations on that theme. It seems that when you hit 'play 159' or '159 play' it should show some dashes where you can enter the unlock code (121212005255) But I never seem to be able to get the dashes. I tried doing it really quick from the start, or later when fully booted. Connected to TV and disconnected...etc.

    What am I doing wrong?

Unlock instructions here for Philips players are notorious for being not 100% correct. For example, you might look at the instructions to unlock the DVP3560. The later instructions are correct. The earlier ones are slightly wrong.

The unlock instructions we have say the following:
    1.On
    On remote:
    2.Tuner
    3.Play
    4.159
    5.121212005255
    6.Play
    7.Standby

Note that DVD recorders usually can't be unlocked and depending on how old your is, there is some chance that Philips changed the hardware and/or firmware on it from earlier ones and the hack no longer works.

Thanks for your reply. Does it say anything about the timing of the first steps? If I turn it on, it just goes to 'no signal TV' and pressing 159 simply 'tries' to switch the channel 3 times.
