I've searched the bet for this problem but not found a solution. I get audio ads playing in the background when I visit a UK online newspaper.
I'm running the free versions of Malwarebytes and Avast.
I scanned with Malwarebytes and found one bad file and removed it. But the problem is back.
Is it a virus?

I went there with an unprotected browser and it did automatically start playing video with ads on some pages. I normally browse with most advertizing sites blocked by my hosts file. That eliminated all the video ads (and most of the other ads) from that site (and most others on the web).

I also usually block java script except for sites that I specifically allow (the NoScript plugin in FireFox). That prevents most drive-by malware infections. -

Me again.
Is this a painless file to download and install? I'm not really clever with tech stuff. Are there settings that have to be tweaked to get it to work? Or can I just install it and let it do it's thing?

The hosts file? Yes, you just download it and put it in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc, replacing the one that's there (rename the original hosts file to keep it as a backup in case you want to go back to it). Then reboot. You'll need admin privileges.
