    In producing a commercial DVD it has occured to me that there might be legal ramifications in dropping a copyrighted song onto the DVD as the menu's audio background. Chances are that it would never even become an issue, but it would be embarrassing to have to deal with an attorney's letter. Better to do the homework. Conceivably there is a whole spectrum of possibilities ranging anywhere from "must obtain permission from copyright holder" to "ok, if properly credited and attributed". It seems this issue must have been contemplated already by other DVD authors. If anyone has researched this issue en route to producing a commercial (i.e. for sale in significant volume) DVD please respond. Thanks.

    That's not legal even if your making a DVD for your own personal use and you own the CD.

    Look for some royalty free music. It will cost you a lot less and remove the legal issues.
