Since DVDFab Platinum has been updated hundreds of times, is it possible that a new update may not work on some older movies, say several years old?

Maybe...but then you just use DVD Shrink or DVDDecrypter.

Yeah, it's possible, but it would suggest serious incompetence to me if it happened.
I highly recommend DVDshrink for encoding to DVD5 anyway. It's done very well, unlike dvdfab. I happily let its trial period lapse but I still use their decrypter (the free part).
Haven't ripped to DVD5 for a while now myself. I rip to DVD9 with dvdfab hd decrypter and then encode to h.264 with handbrake or vidcoder. But my procedure was dvdfab decrypter, then dvdshrink in 2 pass (which they call deep analysis), them imgburn. If it's a long video, maybe the softening filter. The filters in dvdshrink are great.
