How to reduce Audio Bit Rate

Just got new tv for xmas with usb port, everything plays thru it fine except from AVI files with a bitrate of over 200 is there any quick and easy way i can reduce just the bit rate. happy to answer any questions that i have to

You could use avidemux, open avi, under video choose copy, under audio choose mp3 and click Configure to adjust the bitrate, save as new avi.

If you want to batch convert you can try xmedia recode, open all avis, change format to avi, under the video tab click the copy video setting, under the audio tab adjust the bitrate and convert.

i get an error message sayin that the number of channels is greater than the selected audio codec can do !!!

also is there anyway that i would be able to improve the codec on the tv so i did not have to convert?

Not likely there would ever be a way to improve the codec on the TV...

But you could try using a media player to send the decoded audio to the TV as a separate input.

It's your life, but in my opinion this is completely and utterly unacceptable. This why people need to understand that TVs are not "plays anything" devices. You'd be better off to just buy a media player of some type like a Western Digital model instead of having to deal with unreasonable restrictions like this that will cause you to have to re-encode a lot of stuff.

That's a bit ridiculous...200kbps? I barely use that stereo encodes for my iPhone! Get a dedicated media player or use your computer. To answer your question though what I do (with a Mac, so if you don't have one sorry I guess) is drop the video in compressor, and make a AAC and/or AC3 file from that and remux the audio file(s) into the video (make sure to deselect the "high" bit rate 200kbps audio file). For Mp4 container muxing I use subler as it seams to take almost any source but If your AVI isn't H264 then it probably won't work. Mkvtoolnix would be the next best (if not the best) for Mkv container muxing but your TV probably won't like that. Well that was a waste of typing. Just use Handbrake and reencode the entire thing. My mac can encode XviD AVI's to h.264 at like 80 frames per second so I usually do that since I can drop the bit rate in half (though set yours to no less than 128).
