  1. Hi,
I'm trying to measure streaming quality depend on video coding techniques. To do this I will stream the video to network using VLCmedia player and recieve the video at client side.I will do this each codec(h.264,mpeg1-2-3-4 ..etc)
Than I will do a yyuv_psnr calculation for each codecs. The biggest db value codec wiil be good .)
    Is my test logical?
Is yyuv_psnr calculation enough for quality measure or how can I reach the best result for this test?
    I need tips and advices
    Thanks..

  2. The general idea is sound. But psnr isn't the greatest measure of quality as seen by the human eye. For example a codec which delivered perfect results except the frame was shifted sideways by one pixel would get a very bad psnr score. But the difference would be essentially imperceptible to a human unless there was some critical picture content right at the very edge of the frame. Another codec that delivered perfect results but had a small flashing black and white dot in the center of the frame would score really well. But that flashing dot would be very noticeable and would rule it out as an acceptable codec for most applications.

You can look at MSU's quality measurement tool for various measurements of quality -- compared to the original source.

  3. Thanks for explanatory answer.
When I look MSU there are a lot of comparation metrics.I will deeply examine them but can you suggest me a few of them as a good metric?
