I installed Vegas Pro 11 and just got to use it the first time tonight. I need to get a project done but after I render my video is so hard to watch. It is so choppy. What do I need to do? I wonder if there are some settings I need to fix. It is a football highlight of only around 5 minutes long. It is filmed in HDV but captured in SD format from a Sony HDR-FX7. I will still have to make it into a DVD and have not tried it on that yet but after the render I have watched the video and it is so jumpy it is hard to watch. HELP. Thanks.

    1. First edit a better thread title.
    2. Are you getting paid to do this project?
    3. Hard to watch in what way?

So all should be fine. You can also capture HDV and downsize in software.

  3. Sounds like a field order error. Can you post a short sample of the bad video?

I know ed, I know. I was in a hurry and didn't think about the thread title. Quit being so mean. Give a guy a break.
Nope. No pay. I do this for some kids to turn into the state coaches assoc. so they have video of the kids to watch for all state selection. I don't attend the selection process but the guy that goes says that everyone of the people on the selection committee like my videos the best. When motion gets moving fairly quick I wouldn't say it gets blurry but the only way I know how to describe it is jittery. A lot of loose edges on people and moving objects. It almost makes me sick (seriously) watching it.
I think I have solved it though. I changed the settings of field order. I had to set it to progressive in order for it to work properly. I have never had to really do this before. What could the cause of this be?

Wrong profile? Such as? Not sure what you mean.
Source video is direct capture from the HDR-FX7. That would be AVI right?

Jagabo hit upon it: field mismatch. How did you downconvert from HDV to SD in your capture? Or did you record the original footage in SD? Somewhere along the lines, you switched between top field first to bottom field first or vice versa. It could have even happened during your encode to Mpeg2 for DVD. You must go through all your settings to make sure the field order is the same as your camera original footage.

    I agree. Note this.

When capturing HDV* you set your Vegas project and encode with top field first.

When capturing standard def DV format, you set your Vegas project and encode with bottom field first.

    * also when capturing HDV and downsizing in Vegas to SD, project and encoder should be set to top field first.

In the camera I had it down convert the HDV to SD. I just installed the new Vegas Pro 11 and never really checked the field.

So, I am capturing the SD that is coming out of the HDR-FX7. I wonder if it would just be better to capture in HD and just let the machine do the work later when I make DVDs. I have a new powerful computer, so render times are a lot faster, that's for sure.

doesn't sound like you fixed it. there is no way you captured DVavi to vegas and it was progressive.

I then when and put in scene selection but my markers did no show up. I had to put them in again in DVD A. What do you think I did wrong?

Make sure you use the DVD architect encoding templates or the markers won't show up. Other than that I don't know.

You have to feed it with a DVD format, or it will transcode.

Nope, I hadn't. I had not even looked at it since and may have not figured it out for a while. Thanks. I also noticed the stretch video box was checked. What reason does a person check that again? Thanks.
I had everything I needed checked on my Vegas 9 but it had been a couple of years since I have had to do this so I just totally forgot about it.

    From VP Help:

Select the Stretch video to fill output frame size (do not letterbox) check box when you are rendering to an output format with a slightly different aspect ratio than your project settings. This will prevent black bars from appearing on the top and bottom or the sides of the output.

I'd keep this unchecked for HDV source. There should be no letterbox since the source is 16:9.

That check box is for newbies so they don't open a support ticket complaining about "black bars".
