I have no previous experience with MKV files. I have always converted them to xvid. But with a new TV I tried to embed srt subtitles into an MKV file using MKVtoolnix.

However whenever I go near the file I get "Windows Explorer has stopped working" and then the PC crashes. I had to erase the folder.

I have done it three times all with the same result. The third time I outputted it straight to a USB stick but my TV would not recognise it although it had no problem with the original.

The original MKV file already has English subtitles embedded. I wanted to add Polish.

    I am using windows 7.

I presume it is a codec conflict but I would not know.

    Any idea?

I don't know if this is your problem in this case, but it could be. Windows 7 has a known bug regarding some (NOT all) MKV files. Basically Windows just freaks out on certain MKV files. In some cases the files cannot be deleted. I have seen this issue personally. There's also a known issue with Windows Explorer dying and locking up the PC, although that is not necessarily related to the MKV issue.

Here's the bad news. Nobody really knows why these are happening, what is causing them, or how to fix them. There are a few guesses on the Windows Explorer issue, but they involved dubious registry hacks to try to fix. You're on your own to research them and do them if you wish. I have no confidence in them and have not done them. Nobody has any clue what is causing the weird MKV problems in Windows 7 and I haven't seen any attempts at a fix for those.

Does Win7 still allow you to access the DOS/Command Prompt? If so, you can open that, change to the directory and delete the file from there.

    For example:
    Code:
    cd temp
    del file.mkv
I had to do that, once, on my Vista system, to get rid of an MKV with a font that was somehow causing Explorer to crash.

Is this my problem? MKV's don't like the Polish alphabet?

aedipuss, you are quite right. If I change the "system locale" on the computer to Polish I get a fully working mkv and no crashes.

I have however discovered that an srt converted to idx first produces a file which does not crash window explorer even with "system locale" kept in English

    Thanks
