Wow. LG is completely delusional in believing they can sell half a million of these a year at that price.
-
If they are saying Q3 2012 now they may actually deliver by Q1 or Q2 of 2013. Of course at $8000 they are targetingthe rich who can afford the "best". Hopefully the price will eventually come down enough the the rest of of can get one. Maybe our next HDTV (several years from now) will be OLED.

Well don't count on sony for competition in this sector:

It says they are bowing out of the home oled market before it starts.Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -
Maybe Sony is pursuing a different new technology instead. It looks like there are others that could be used for making ultra-thin panels.
Did anyone else see the a link to a story about another new TV display type, "quantum dot", at the bottom of the page with the article about Sony? http://www.digitaltrends.com/home-theater/british-scientists-hope-to-introduce-quantum...-soon-as-2012/ -
I don't need thinner and lighter. I need cheaper.
By the way, the quantum dot story is about the back lighting. They still use LCD panels.Last edited by jagabo; 8th Jan 2012 at 22:37.

Some OLED rumors for CES like last 3 years but that doesn't mean much.
News ranges from Sony dropping out of OLED to wild rumors about Apple iTV being based on LG OLED at $10K price.Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.

I do know what you mean as I work with some truly hard core Mac fanboys and I've said for years that if Apple sold an iTurd that was just a piece of dry feces in a box that did nothing and it cost $100, they would buy it. But I only know one guy in the group who would maybe pay $10k for an iTV. All the others wouldn't even consider it.
There are rumors that Apple is trying to marry their unimpressive Apple TV technology (tops out at 720p) with a TV, but I would have to think that surely consumers aren't interested in that. -

The ps3 is fine but I just like the ease of adding points for impulse buys better on the xbox than the ps3. Its bad in way for temptation but when you just gotta have it nothings simpler than hitting the blue x button for ADD POINTS and boom there you go. Unfortunately you still have to pay for it later but its so frickin easy.Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -
You know you are getting old when you're biggest concern about your next TV is how your VHS to DVD footage is going to look on it.

Why Sony is abandoning OLED:

It will be interesting to see if it has a more realistic picture. The picture on LCD's, to me, have always given things a
"plastic" look. The typical LCD I see in the showroom is big, bright, reasonably sharp, but looks very little like real life.
