I think it is time to retire my current PC (its about 6 years old). I am wondering if any of you know of a good pc to purchase that would be ideal for editing and occasional game play.(but mainly for editing with Premiere, After Effects, Photoshop, etc etc.) I would like to be able to just purchase one ready to go rather than build it, etc. Even if I went to a site to pick and choose what I want, I wouldnt know what to pick and choose!

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

This would be great for editing but you might choose a different display card for games. You said nothing about price but this sure can handle editing (AVID certified). ~$2500 street.

Anything with dual or quad cores, Intel preferably, at least 3GB RAM (4GB+ if 64-bit OS).

I think anything to what I currently have will help. Its been a good computer, but I think its time to go to that electronic place in the sky lol. As far as cost, I was thinking more in the range of 800-1000 dollars. Do I go HP? Dell? Gateway? If I do go with Vista (shutters at the thought) do I go 64bit? Will that mess with internet searches etc? Calgon take me away!

I've always favored building my own. You can still by oem versions of XP if you don't want to go with vista. Like LS said if you want more than 3gb of ram then you will need 64bit OS.

Check your software for Vista 32/64 compatibility (or wait for Windows 7).

    Options
    1. Build or upgrade (mobo+quadcore+memory+good display card) ~$400+ (add more for case, kb, PS, OS etc.)
    2. Buy a new system

  9. Stick with XP or wait for Windows 7. Vista is a dog even with a higher end processor and 2 GB ram.

While it is definately not my favorite OS vista is really not that bad but it certainly does need lots of ram. My wifes laptop has vista installed on it and it runs pretty well. But it does have 3gig ram and 2 ghz dual core processor. If you put xp on the same machine it would definatly run faster than vista because xp uses less resources than vista does. Windows 7 is supposed to fair better with system resources. The public beta has been out for a while and got good reviews but the final release may be different.

One of the best out there. Stick around and get to know some of the fine people here. Even answer some questions if you feel comfortable with it.

  11. I don't know... I recently got a high-end Dell desktop at the office, and it runs Vista along with XP in a virtual machine simultaneously and they both run really fast at the same time.

I think the biggest problem with Vista is (still) driver and software compatibility.

Adobe apps before the CS4 series had 64bit issues with both XP and Vista. Check system requirements for your version (including updates).

  14. How much do you want to spend?, obviously i7core for now is the best. With it can run 8 cores with hyper threading. Even the lower speed beats everything else out there.
