Was giving a friends Toshiba Laptop to look over because of problems. I proceed to turn on and after displaying the Toshiba logo it goes to a black screen with a flashing cursor in the upper left corner. I have tried booting it up in safe mode by repeatedly pressing the F8 key after turning it on but have not been able to get it to work. Any ideas.

hitting delete or f1 repeatedly at startup will usually get you into the bios. see if there is a boot drive listed.

Sounds like the hard drive is trying to boot but cannot. Could be a bad hard drive or maybe just corrupted.
