Ripped video stops randomly for 1 or 2 seconds

Scenario: Rip a video with subtitles to AVI Xvid in FFMPEGX in OSX Lion.

Transfer to USB stick, play in DVD player/Television.

Movie will randomly stop for one or two seconds and then recommence, maybe from the same spot or a little ahead.

Converting the same media (same usb stick etc) via KIGO Video Converter gives no such problem.

I know the easy fix is to ditch FFMPEGX and just use KIGO but I my preference is for FFMEGX due to better control, options and speed etc.

Is there and easy fix?

Is there a difference in playback between the output using the XviD mencoder preset and the XviD ffmpeg preset? Their output could be slightly different because these use different encoding engines. Perhaps one of them is more compatible with your player.

This has crossed my mind - I am trying a couple of different preset to see if I can strike it lucky.
