just wondering why i can have 200 mg file on one movie in avi and 753 mgs in mpeg format

its because of BITRATE.
AVIs (normally divx) can utilize a smaller but more lossy compression, therefore, using a substantially smaller bitrate, whereas MPEG requires a much larger bitrate. this is understandable because MPEG was introduced many many years ago, but divx is a fairly new type of compression algorythm, hence the smaller filesize... MPEG is only better and more common because of its compatability with certain hardware. divx is still in its experimental stages of development.
