I've seen this new VSO Media Player, so I've just tried it. (VSO used to be a respectable company, I think.)
It didn't play any kind of video. Tried DVD, avi, mkv... black screen.
During uninstall, it wanted to connect to the internet (couple of firewall alerts), and there were a bunch of pop-ups and questions about DLLs removing from the system (XP SP1).
I finally ended up removing it and restoring my system with "System restore".

	I don't use VSO Media Player as my primary media player but I have had none of the problems you mentioned. It works fine so I have not had to uninstall it but so far no unusual behaviour either. Maybe it prefers Windows 7
