Specify what kind of video you have and someone may suggest an appropriate tool.

    Eg, VirtualDub for AVI files.

You need to be more specific.

I would also like to know this. I record a webcam with VLC, it produces .asf files - but I can't find a simple "trimmer" that will cut off (or take out) excess footage without converting it. I have tried ASFBINWIN but it's too complicated for me

Tipard (a GiveawayoftheDay program) says that it retains .asf format but somehow adds so much data that a 2-minute clip takes longer to upload to YouTube than the 10-minute original. Debut won't tackle .asf; Machete asks you to select frames, which are not apparent. I've tried several other programs too, am currently using Freemake - a great program but it won't cut without converting.

    Any advice appreciated.

There are a couple of free programs that cut TS files but none of them work well IMO since they do not do exact frame editing. VideoRedo is the only program that will do exact frame editing without re-encoding and it is not free.

    .

For ASF files, Use Virtualdub to open your ASF/WMV file (you'll need the wmv plugin or the Directshow Input Driver) and find your cuts. Note the time codes of your cuts and enter those cuts in Windows Media File Editor. Type the first time code and hit Seek > Ten hit Mark In > Type in second time code and hit Seek > Hit Mark Out > Under File, choose Save As and Index.

Thank you Darrell I did install VirtualDub, can't remember what the problem was exactly but I wonder if it was to do with the plugins you mention, so I'll try again.

    H264TS Cutter
    TS Sniper

Fame Ring Smart Cutter - $40 (frame accurate editing but cuts aren't real clean)
    VideoRedo 4 - $95.99
