I've been using SmartCutter from Fame-Ring for pretty much anything else besides VC-1 to cut some unwanted scenes from my ripped Blu-ray collection, Just recently started to backup my HD-DVD collection before the disc rot destroy it all, I use Makemkv to rip the main movie and extras to hard drive, Since I don't use any compression or encoding to another codec, just 1:1 rip, the resulting files are VC-1 that is used by Microsoft/Toshiba for HD-DVD discs, Unfortunately SmartCutter does not support VC-1. Is there any other simple frame accurate trimming tools available out there that do not encode the files, I just need to trim sections losslessly, no editing or special effects needed.

  2. Have you tryed Avidemux (not frame accurate, but on keyframes only)?

@ ProWo, it has to be frame accurate, @videoAI, I will give that a try and report back, I'm curious to see if it cuts thru multi track audio and subtitles as well just like SmartCutter.

Unfortunately LosslessCut is not frame accurate, it is only in experimental mode and choosing frame accurate gave me a warning message at the export stage saying it cannot render frame accurate and prompted me to use normal mode.

Also I didn't get how this software works, When I chop off segments it leave blank gaps instead of joining the timeline all together like other software do, So when I export it only exports the selected segment, not the entire timeline.

Edit: I figured out the second part by selecting join segments.

It seems like VC-1 was left out and nothing supported it or will support it.

Dellsam, could you attach a largish VC1 file, maybe Google Drive, with your super-upload speed? I'd like to try it on Videoredo.

Ironically I used LosslessCut to produce a 1:1 VC-1 segment from the main file, It should have two audio tracks and two subtitles texts.
I know I had trouble before with Vredo, It wouldn't handle multi track and subtitles, One of the earlier versions though.

No luck with VRD; it wouldn't even quick-stream-fix it, it froze.

AVIDemux gave this message when I tried to open the file:

And MediaInfo is showing a (variable) frame rate of 800fps.

Yeah, I figured it's an impossible request, VC-1 is officially dead in my opinion.

What I don't understand is, the FFmpeg project includes a free VC-1 decoder, so how come no one was able to make a GUI tool based off of FFmpeg that can decodes and encodes at only the frame level were the cuts are made? I even asked the Fame-ring admin 12 years ago about their SmartCutter tool and he said that VC1 smart rendering is not available at the time, I'm assuming there will never going to be supported if the codec is dead now when they didn't bother when the it was still relevant.

Probably failed the CBA (Cost-Benefit Analysis/Can't Be @rsed) test. Even after all this time and the popularity of H264, only true frame-accurate smart-editors/renderers appear to be VideoRedo and TMPEGenc.

If the empty bits/whatever really annoy you, you could just edit them out and re-render it at the same or higher bitrate. I would imagine the original encoding would be very high quality (13.4GB over 3 hours of HD isn't light-on either) so a re-render would probably result in good-enough quality. I recoded Topgun Maverick from a 30GB+ Bluray down to 5GB with my run-of-the-mill NLE and it came out great. Who's going to watch it other than you?
