probelm converting .mov to .avi

Hi everybody..I am a newbie. My son runs a small charity to fund the building of a school in Rwanda, Africa and he recently shot some video out there. I have been given the job of assembling the files into a complete video for publication. These files are .mov and as I am using Movie maker I must convert them to .avi. Everything went fine except for one file which when converted would not load. Movie maker kept giving an error message. The file views fine (with sound) when viewed as a .mov file and without sound when viewed as a converted .avi file using 'VLC media player'. I have tried many (free) conversion programmes without success. Can anybody suggest a way forward. it is not possible to reshoot the video.
