question: home theater says non-supported resolution for some avi files and i cannot understand why!

    i have the following:

    1. file:
    blabla.720p.BDRip.XviD.AC3-blabla.avi
    mediainfo details

    2. tv: (european union specs)
    sony bravia kdl-32s2530 32”
    screen resolution: 1366 horizontal * 768 vertical
    video color system:
analog: pal, secam, ntsc 3.58, 4.43 (only video in)
    digital: mpeg-2 mp@ml
    hdmi in supports:
    - video: 480i, 480p, 576i, 576p, 720p, 1080i

    3. home cinema: (european union specs)Philips hts3115
    disc section:
    laser type: semiconductor
    disc diameter: 12cm / 8cm
    video decoding: mpeg-1 / mpeg-2 / DivX 3/4/5/6, Ultra
    video dac: 12 bits
    signal system: pal / ntsc
    video format: 4:3 / 16:9
    video s/n: 65db
    composite video
    output: 1.0 vp-p, 75Ω
    audio dac: 24 bits / 192 kHz
    frequency response : 4hz–20khz (44.1khz), 4hz– 2khz (48khz), 4hz-44khz (96khz)
    supports fat 16 κ 32, not ntfs
    plays: DivX files on CD-R[W]/DVD+R[W]
    -DivX 3/4/5/6, DivX Ultra
    -qpel (quarter pixel)

    points to note and problem:
the avi resolution from media info is 1280x720 and the tv screen resolution is 1366x768, so there should be no problem there.

so, it is definitely then a home cinema issue. i have connected the home theater with the tv via hdmi and have selected 720p at home theater hdmi setup. still no go! why?

Your dvd/divx player does not support HD resolutions. Most divx players just supports up to around 720x576.

thx a lot Baldrick fro the prompt answer!!! so that's why!!!

would the best long term solution be a direct vga cable connection from the pc to the tv? the vga cable would have to be around 10 meters long cause pc and tv are in different rooms.

Yep, a PC would be the best. A 10 meter VGA works good or a 10 meter high quality HDMI/DVI cable. You need also a audio cable if you use VGA or DVI.

the hdmi solution is preferable to vga then? the tv does not have a dvi input.

also since i'm going to rebuild one of my pcs, should i look out for some specific graphics card in light of this situation?

and for audio do i use that dual cable with white and red jacks for left and right?

below is the pc signal reference chart and all tv sockets for external equipment:

  6. A simple solution is to use a media player like the Western Digital WDTV Live Plus. Or any of a number of others: Seagate FreeAgent Theater+, Asus O!Play, Diamond Media Wonder, TVIX, Patriot Box, AC Ryan Playon, Hauppauge HD Media Player, Xtreamer Pro, Dune HD, Popcorn Hour, Boxee Box, PopBox...

    thx a lot jagabo

i'm more inclined though to drill the wall, cause that way i'll have access to all my hard disk videos, and i'll ctrl the pc in the other room via laptop remote desktop

Most of those media players can access the files on your computer via wireless or wired networking.
