  1. I work a lot with color correction so I would like to keep as much as possible of the color information that the camera gets when I capture my video into my computer

Is it possible to get 4:2:2 (or better) video out of the Sony Z1U camera?
Is it a matter of how one captures the video into the computer or which camera output one uses?

I hope this question makes sense to someone

Please let me know what you all think

    I've got an HVR-Z1U. Tape records to 1440x1080i 4:2:0 HDV MPeg2.

Firewire gets you a bit for bit digital transfer from tape. Neoscene Cineform conversion gets you an interpolated 4:2:2 intermediate.

Only other option is analog component Y, Pb, Pr out.

Is this true for live video also or just for miniDV tapes?
What if I capture the analog component output to a matrox mxo2 mini to apple pro ress 422? Would this be a real 422 ?

Thank you for your answers, very helpful

As far as I can tell, Firewire transfer in live mode is still HDV. Otherwise the captured file would be larger. I haven't measured the analog component PbPr chroma vertical bandwidth. Horizontally, 4:2:2 and 4:2:0 are similar.

It may be possible to get 4:2:2 chroma with analog component capture at the cost of D/A, A/D luminance loss.

Keep in mind that DVD, Blu-Ray, ATSC and DVB are all 4:2:0. So is the Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC).

  7. I guess it is better to stick to firewire because I need to run long cables for my cameras so firewire would be better since it is all digital

    Thanks edDV
