  1. Hi--
Sort of like how dbPoweramp will show detailed specs of an audio file with a mouse over, is there anything that'll conveniently show the specs of a video file? Windows works for .avi, but it doesn't provide much for .mkv, .m4v, etc.

Install MediaInfo, as zoobie suggested. That should provide tooltips with some information about the videos when you hover over the files in Windows' Explorer. GSpot doesn't offer anything of the sort, unfortunately.

(Note that I can't remember, offhand, whether or not it's an option, and enabled by default, in MediaInfo. I'm currently not at a system with MediaInfo installed.)

That said, it's still a good idea to keep both around.

  3. You need both GSpot and MediaInfo. MediaInfo provides information about more file types. But GSpot provides more information about the files it fully supports (MPG, Divx/Xvid AVI, etc.). MediaInfo reports the bitrate by reading the container level information (which may not be accurate, the header can say anything). GSpot reports the bitrate by reading through the entire file (for MPG and AVI) and is therefore more accurate.

Another useful tool is Bitrate Viewer.
