  1. Creating VCD's from large AVI's and am having HUGE problems doing 1 simple little thing....just splitting the AVI in half so it will fit on cd. I split exactly in half using virtual dub, first disk is always great, second is always WAY out of sync with audio...not gradually, rather immediately.

Can't see that I'm doing anything wrong in vdub. Tried AVIChop...that just blows up on me using 2 different PC's so I gave up on that.

Is there something I can use when burning with Nero to tell it to continue on disc 2, use multiple discs, etc? Or better yet, what is the easiest way to simply cut the original AVI in half?

    Thanks for any advice.

If you convert the whole AVI to Mpeg first, then use TMPGEnc or VCD Cutter to split the file.

  3. Thanks,

VCD Cutter won't let me split with the demo, and I can't figure quite how to do that with TMPGEnc?....but I'm willing to learn ;-)

In TMPEGEnc goto file - Mpeg Tools - Merge & Cut

Have Type set to Mpeg 1 VCD.

Click Add and find the mpeg file you need to cut.

Click on your file then Edit.

A box will come up with your video clip. If you look under the play button there are two buttons which mark the in and out points on the part you want to cut. Do this then press ok.

On the output file click browse and put the cut file where you want.

Then click run and it will cut the file. This can take some time expecialy if the cut is at the end of your video clip.

    Enough info for you?

  7. Cutting an AVI file in virtualdub should not generate out of sync issues.

Are you cutting on a K frame ?

  8. KFrame? I guess not since I don't know what that is....I simply cut at the exact halfway point (frames divided by 2).

  9. How do you encode your AVI into MPEG.?
If you use TMPGenc, you can tell it to encode the first half to one MPEG file then encode the second half to the second MPEG file.
I found this is much safer for me since I usually encode into XVCD. And the cut/join do not work with VBR MPEG-1.

  10. An AVI file is made out of Key frames and Delta frames. When playing the file, Delta frames are calculated from Key frames. You can read details about that in VirtualDub help file.

    Anyway, try the following:

    Load the complete AVI file.
Go to Video Menu/Compression/Select Intel Indeo 5.1 codec
Move the slider to 100% and check Force Key Frame every 1 Frame
    Select Video Full Processing Mode
    Select Audio Direct Stream Copy
Save as Segmented AVI (choose a location where you have enough disk space).

VirtualDub will save your file as a serie of 2GB files.

When finish close the file, open the new file, make sure autodectect and laod additionnal segments is selected.

When file is loaded, verify it is all there (from beginning to end).

When moving through the file using the Arrow Keys, you should see at the bottom of the window that every frame is marked as (K) for key frame.

Now try to cut it in half again.

Let us now if it works.
