First of all let me start by saying I feel really stupid about this thread, I did something I knew might turn out bad. I used Windex (a big no-no) on my laptop surface to clean it. Now fingerprints and smudging are harder to clean off than before, it seems that the protective coating might be compromised.

Is there anything I can use to reverse this process? Anytime I touch the computer's surface I get fingerprints and smudges that are hard to remove unless I use a damp cloth.

You learned an expensive lesson. You can't reverse the process, but you can put a laptop screen protector (do a google search) over the screen. That way you can protect it from further damage and smudges.

Windex should be kept at a distance from all valuable electronics and optics. I'm still fuming over the day (many years ago) that a clueless office assistant, trying to be helpful, used Windex to clean a camera lens. Ooooooh!

Thanks for the response filmboss80. I was able to get a product from one of my IT people that seems to help alot. The smuding has decreased significantly. The surface is smooth again it feels almost like new, the product is sold by Amway and is called "LEGACY OF CLEAN".

Hopefully it will continue to work for me, I've learned my lesson.

What do you mean by "surface"?
    the screen?
    the exterior case?
    the panel around the keyboard?

I have an old Thinkpad that was pretty scratched up around the keyboard and I polished it up a bit with fine sandpaper, but it's far from smooth to the touch. I've been wondering if there was anything safe to use to refurbish the surface. (I can live with it being a bit rough rather than dissolve it testing things.)

I Googled "Legacy of Clean" and it's not a specific product but a brand name. There are dozens of products sold under that label.
