    Hi,

I want to put all my tv episodes onto dvd to free up space on my hdd. all the episodes are 720p HD, typically 1.09GB in size and 45 mins in length. I want to maintain the highest possible quality whilst fitting as many episodes onto a disc as possible.

Firstly I put 3 episodes into convertxtodvd and it tells me that the encoder will produce the highest possible quality (project auto-medium length) video. When I start to convert the bitrate averages about 2500 kbits/s, however, when it has finished converting the folder size is only 2.65GB. From this I assumed that I could fit another 2 episodes on at the same quality to take the project to about 4.5GB, however, when I add just one more episode convertxtodvd tells me that the project is now only going to encode at 'good' quality (project auto-long length) and when I start to convert the bitrate averages about 1600 kbits/s.

I never finished converting with 5 episodes to see what the final filesize would've been as I want to keep the highest possible quality, which is about 2500 kbits/s from what convertxtodvd has told me from the first encode with 3 episodes.

Can I fit more than 3 on at the highest quality? why is the final size only 2.65GB when I convert 3 only? I need an explanation!!

ConvertXtoDVD does a single pass VBR encode based somewhat on quality, kinda. What I have noticed with version 4 however is a propensity to produce undersized output. Which is why I don't use it. I do still keep a copy of version3 around, but mostly I use AVStoDVD instead. If your source is good, I would stick with only two episodes a disc for high quality, and maybe 4 episodes for good to OK quality, depending on the content. More than that is just asking for low quality output.
