Zoom H4n connections

I have just purchased a Zoom H4n digital recorder. The application is shooting video for a Public Access TV show. Canon GL-2 cameras are used. The show is interviewing people (mostly visual artists) on location (their art studio or gallery), discussing their art.


The sound is handled by a Sony UMP-V6 wireless mike kit. Post production is done in Final Cut Pro 6.


My question is the connection between the Sony Tuner (receiver) model URX –P2 and the Zoom recorder.


The output of the Sony tuner is a 3.5 mm jack -- and Sony supplies 2 short cables. One is a 3.5 mm to 3.5 mm and the other is a 3.5 mm to XLR.


Which cable should I use to input to the Zoom? And does it matter which I use?

By all means, use the XLR connections (the URX P2 should have them), as balanced mic connections are less prone to noise interference. Use the 3.5mm jack for monitoring. Also, set your Zoom H4 to record 48000Hz, 16-bit .wav files -- not mp3. Just make sure your SD memory card is large enough to store the files. (At least 2GB).

Thank you. I am focusing on improving my audio. In the past I just fed mikes into the camcorder.

From all that I have read the H4n should improve my sound, especially since each location presents new challenges.
