    Hi everyone...

I have a few of the classic JVC DR-MV1 units as well as several of the SR-MV variants (40us, 45us, 50us, 55us, etc) and was wondering about the actual encoding that the LSI chipset performs.

I know that these units are famous for their filtered cleanup of VHS tapes when dubbing. But, what exactly does this entail? And, do these combo units do the same filtering with sources plugged into the analog inputs just as the stand alone sister JVC recorders of the era did? What happens with DIGITAL inputs via firewire...do they get filtered/cleaned-up as well? I always assumed they did not...but now I'm not so sure.

What EXACTLY does the LSI chipset DO to the source in the following scenarios to "clean them up"?

    1) Dubbing from internal VHS drive
    2) Recording from external sources via the S-Video or Composite inputs
    3) Recording digitally via the firewire input

What sparked my curiousity was I was reading through some older posts on this forum and someone listed his preferred chain to capture VHS to DVD and the last step before the JVC dvd recorder was to come out of a Digital8 camcorder (for cleanup) via the camcorder's firewire into the JVC. I understood the idea of wanting even additional benefits of the camcorder's processing capability, but also I assumed that by going digital to the JVC that this would bypass the legendary qualities of the JVC's recording filters since it was receiving a digital signal...then I realized that I may be wrong and that the JVC cleans up digital firewire signals as well. But...does it?

    Does someone know for sure?

    Thanks!
    Jeff

There were actually several variations of the 86xx chips, and they did not all process DV the same. I have spec diagrams of some of the chipsets, but not sure where. If I find them, I'll let you know and share what I find. They list the tasks of the chipset.
